Challenge: Build a Better Groundhog
Objective:
Every February 2, all eyes fall on Punxsutawney, Pa., where a groundhog named Phil pops out of his hole to issue his forecast: if he sees his shadow, six more weeks of winter; if he doesn't, early spring. Fun is fun, but weather reports from a rodent? Can you think of a more reliable invention to predict the coming of spring?
Useful Hints:
Watch a TV weather report or visit a website like http://www.noaa.gov/ to see how meteorologists make forecasts. Remember, your invention doesn't necessarily need to take measurements—it can also collect that information.
Did You Know:
Groundhog supporters say he's 75%-90% accurate. Studies claim it's more like 30%. If you were just to make a random guess, you'd have a better chance than that (50-50).
